Lovely weather for ducks

Lovely weather for ducks.

There have been 40 to 80 mallards back for winter residence at our neighbor's little pond.

This is the same pond that, last year, a pair of Canadian Geese and their 7 little ones called home. We have seen only one goose return last year, and because they mate for life - there were no goslings. But this year in 2004 there have been flybys by a mated pair. Time will tell if we get a new couple this year. The pussywillow tree on the island is also showing its catkins, another sign of early late winter.

Cloudy and Rainy weather is normal this time of year. We have been getting a soggy dose lately... , but still they say the water reservoir level is not at normal. In Alaska, it's been a normal snowy cold winter this year, not like the snowless winter of last year. Maybe they can even run the Iditarod race in proper style this year.

so very un-Sequim-like; 8 inches of snow in our yard!

This is normally very good weather for the daffodils and tulips. In 3 weeks it will have been four years since we first saw (and bought) this house. 'Last year at this time we had eight inches of snow- but so far just one snow day this winter in Sequim. The weatherman predicts rain and more rain, with warming temperatures by the weekend.

In the Sequim Post Office, there are two murals which so enhance life here. One has been painted in the solid back North wall of the service counter. As a body waits in line, he has a chance to "look at" Sequim as seen from high in the foothills behind it to the south. There are animals peering down and there are ships steaming on the Straits. The other is this one in the lobby, a stylized version. Admiring those peaceful panoramas sure makes any wait go by quickly. The staff at the Post Office is cheerful, smiling and very helpful. It's A Sequim Thing.

But the Lehman's Mural, a community effort, is no more. The new owner has completed his renovations and the building, a former grocery store, is now ready for tenants. We have to wait and see which businesses move in - so far the show-windows have antiques in a few of them. Amidst all thechatter about the three Malls coming to Sequim, I don't know where the businesses will come from.

The bucolic air of rural sequim is evident as we descend Bell Hill and head into town.

And this was a typically Sequim scene this January;- cows in pasture, homes and town just beyond; and the Straits as the northern boundary. There has been fog - but you know what kind of photo that makes...
