First frosts
Trollhaven

There was a spectacular sunset Tuesday last week; the radio announcer describing traffic jams in Seattle spoke of it while admonishing drivers to keep their eyes on the road ..."but oh look at that sunset, will you?"

Spectacular Seattle sunset paints the skies in flaming orange and yellow

Cold and Crisp in the early mornings; the dahlias have all nodded their heads and finished out the year here. Protected plantings by the house are still viable but not for long. It has been a dry clear cold week here.

We've had the first frosts of early morning; now it is time to plant the tulip bulbs for next Springs' flowers. Summer is just a memory - the temperatures are much cooler in the mornings these days. After yesterday's rainfall the day dawned sunny, skies washed clean and crisp; but then the clouds began re-forming. They were magnificent billowing cumulus which would blot out the sunshine and cast a chill in the air, interspersed with brilliant sunshine.

To get in the mood for America's Halloween festivities approaching this Wednesday Night, we took a drive to Gardiner to once again look at one man's castle, Bandy's Trollhaven.

These wooden carved figures look like they have headaches from holding up the barn roof. another headache carving There are carvings: trolls and dragons of wood are all around the area.
Four such carved figures hold up the four corners of this barn.

emerging from the shrubs is this wooden dragon

Here's the corner fencepost!
Emerging from the bushes, this wooden Dragon towers over you. So does this troll -across the street - sort of acting as a signpost to Trollhaven.

These Carvings are *BIG*!

The public Library's current home, a lovely building.

I went to the Public Library this week to get some books.

It's a tidy, well-organized small library; part of the North Olympic Library System which serves all of Clallum County. It has the amenities such as Computer Internet access for the public. That is a really valuable resource for travellers. We were able to check our home e-mail when we first visited Sequim, here at the Library.

The card catalog access is via computer, too. It is not difficult to use. They have the usual books and magazines, reference works, microfiche files, CD's and tapes available for check-out.

There are library story-hours for the small children, and other programs for adults.

Inside the library, a peek shows the magzine rack and the 'fiche', and some prints on the walls

The Friends of the Library do hold a monthly book sale of donated items for fund-raising for the little things for the library whch are not included in the county budget. I always find bargains at those sales.

The library hopes to expand within a year or two - these things take such a long time. The current building is too small to house their collection adequately. They were looking at several ways of going about this: remodelling the old building; selling it and buying and renovating an existing larger building; or starting from scratch on a new building. All these options require floating a bond by the good citizens of Sequim, for all options cost lots of money. hmm.
