Another visit to the Game Farm
The River Festival this weekend

fresh flowers from our garden- company's coming!

For the past 2 weekends we have had visitors,
always a pleasure for us.

One of the highlights of these visits is a chance to go through the Olympic Game farm again.
Each trip there is a litttle different. We learned from the last time that 3 loaves of bread would not get us through the driving tour with enough for all the creatures - so this time we got 5 loaves, one for each of us to dole out, and one spare. They warn everyone about the buffalo and the zebra, and I can see why! They'd move right into the car if they could.

One of many on the trails, this dark rabbit avoided the vehicle tires to garner a handout- yes, they ate bread pieces, too. What was the first critter we saw??? Why, a rabbit! There were rabbits everwhere this time. Also, Seagulls - who always hang around the prairie dogs' dens and steal the bread from the furry rodents... and their many peacocks and peahens. They know where to get free food. A little further on down the road the game animals - the yaks and llamas -began to crowd around the cars and lie down in the roads to stop traffic for handouts. These are, after all, retired actors and can put on a show for you, if you know how to draw out their acting abilities.

a real actor - a Kodiak brown bear.
After the llamas and the zebras - These aggressive bread-diggers poke their heads right into the car windows! - , we rounded the corner to the bears - the real hams. If you wave a piece of bread and growl at the bears they will sit up, wave a paw and growl back. But then they have earned their slice, and you better give it to them. We, like most folks, use up much of the bread at this bear circuit of the Farm... it's just a tidbit to them.

In the center of the drivethrough are the caged animals, the "do not feed" animals, many of whom were sleeping. There were the big cats - tigers, cougars, and the wolves and coyotes, and even a rhino. After driving by them, we turned into the south field.

There we saw several Bison- sentinels of the gates- They loomed over the cars - Click on the bison and you'll see a larger photo, definitely more realistic.

large antlers add to the stature of this white deer. deer snacks on one of the last pieces of bread in this carload of visitors. The antlered elk and deer roam throughout a large field, sharing the buffalo's turf. Another drive past the buffalo and we were back through the barrier gates, car unscratched. Whew!

Lloyd Beebe's Game Farm biography.
In the Gift Shop, I bought the book written by Lloyd Beebe, the founder of the Game Farm. It is a fascinating story about his life and that of the Game Farm's origins.

Next week it is again our turn to become visitors: we return to our 'favorite overseas excursion'; to Victoria, BC, Canada... a delightful mini-vacation spot.

The Empress, on the waterfront, with 2 double-decker busses.

A peek at the past: a year ago. Sequim's QFC grocery store had been undergoing some major modernizations... and Wednesday was the Grand Re-opening Celebration! What a surprise to drive up and see Amanda Bacon, one of QFC's barristas, singing outside the store! She was singing from her new CD album coming out soon. That called for a latte! ...and there was cake and coffee in the store for all. You can still buy her CD at the QFC store and she still creates a mean latte

Happy cake day here at QFC!

Sequim is always full of nice surprises...
and don't forget to head out to the Dungeness Down by the River Day at the Railroad Bridge Park tSaturday the 27th. There will be lots of activities, hourly talks, and walks down to the River - dress appropriately; this is a foot on the cobblestones walk. You may even spot a silver or two heading upriver - it's that time again.
