Send a postcard from Sequim.
I've been really enjoying this glorious summer of gardening and blossoms, but all good things end as surely as the earth continues on around the sun. 'tis the autumnal equinox now... the beginning of the weather season. There'll be some glorious sunshine, drenching rain, blustery wind, and back again to sunshine to toast and dry out the earth.
Now the leaves are turning colors- some reds in with the yellows - pumpkins are ripening. Fall is approaching. I can feel it in the air. Local Irrigation water districts have cut the use of their river water to zero to allow the salmon enough water in the river to spawn. This happens every Sept. 15th. The salmon have priority over the crops.
The Dungeness Down to the River Day is next weekend. There will be shows at the Railroad Bridge Park, speakers, a fun run to open the morning, non-competitive, and not really a run - just a mile or so... a visitor center to explore... and possibly rain! for the fish? Free admission.
There's one slow and easy way to really see the beauty of the Sequim Valley and area -
by balloon, on a clear morning...
Early Sunday morning, 2 years ago, one such descended - or was driven by the pilot - to earth
on our street, in front of (and onto ) our house! These photos were taken by our
neighbor Bob Harris, who saw the whole thing. The balloonists controlled the
drop of the balloon and just missed the roof. Then they were assisted by
friends in a truck who had watched their descent, and had driven to the right
spot to pick them up. It was all over, bundled up and put away, in minutes.
The Clallam County Primary Election results are unofficially in and the voters said 'NO' to taxes, both new and continuations of old ones... Affected agencies are discussing what to do now. Washington state's government is also facing deficits- down there in Olympia, as are our medical practitioners. It's hard to find jobs that pay a living wage, especially here in the country. All this reflects the uncertainty of todays' economic situation... yes, even in Sequim. In the general election in November we voters may have another shot at the SARC (community Swimming Pool) funding. But it may fare no better then; as one person said, "If the taxpayers want to help me out with my dues, more power to them. " Maybe they won't, and the SARC will have to be totally self-supporting.
