On Friday my friend Debby came over and announced we were going to lunch at the
Arctic Rose - I had never been there before - and it was high time I paid a
visit to the Anchorage Senior Center anyway. It's in a beautiful building at
1300 E. 19th Avenue, down by Chester Creek, east of the Seward Highway.
My previous contact with a senior center was in Seldovia -where everyone knows everyone, and lunch is available 3 days a week - I've even cooked for them occasionally substituting for the regular cooks when they were unable to make it.
Here in Anchorage, the Arctic Rose Restaurant, located within the Senior Center itself, is a Monday- Friday regular event, with openings on weekends for special occasions. There's also the Starlight Ballroom for dancing every Friday evening with live music - card rooms, physical fitness classes of all sorts, arts and crafts groups, support groups, lectures, blood-pressure checkups, lots of volunteer assistance to keep things running smoothly.

and the classes! -
Art classes include
a Friday afternoon class in portrait - study
using live models and teacher Phil McGuire who helps a student "see" what's
there
and put it on paper with charcoal or pastels.
$5 a session! The drawings were wonderful!
And there'll be some quilt raffles for Christmas too. What a lovely pattern!
