It snowed on the night of the 25th/26th -
about four inches at our house.
After the plow came, two days later, we were left with this skating rink out front.
There was mayhem on the streets the morning of the 26th as the Anchorage drivers learn once more about slick spots caused by sun warming compacted snow and glazing it over. People were driving cautiously, just creeping along; still there were the usual fender-benders and heart-in-throat skidding traction-less moments when traffic lights changed and the brakes wouldn't stop the car. Anchorage police attended to more than 150 accidents, up from the normal 2 dozen or so, plus those which people didn't call the police for. It happens every year...
Not that the pedestrians had it any easier - City shoes on that slick stuff brought many people to their knees - or worse. Even after negotiating the vehicle to a safe place, a body has to walk into the building...
The City of Anchorage wages a campaign each winter to drive away the dark-time
blues - We are asked to use the little white lights to trim the homes and trees
in our yards. The "whitelights season" runs from October 27 until the last
Iditarod musher arrives at Nome. Carl and Bob-next-door trimmed the big spruce
between the homes just before the snow came down... perfect timing.
